ORIENTAL MOOD (14/02/2014) 20:30
A project by Ahmad Compaoré as part of the "Entre... croisements" cycle.
The Mediterranean and European musical scene shows a constant ferment, stimulated by the passion of artists who draw their inspiration and their identity at the origins of the tradition to invent contemporary forms. This programme proposes leading artists having influenced their country's musical scene as well as the international scene, who will come and meet the public on the new territories of the MuCEM.
Of Egyptian origins, drummer and composer Ahmad Compaoré confirms his singular talent alongside Fred Frith, Marc Ribot, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Camel Zekri or choreographer Karima Mansour. For over 20 years, he equally enjoys various projects in improvised music, jazz and fusion, sharing his creativeness between music, dance, theatre and digital art.
Ahmad Compaoré has imagined ORIENTAL MOOD with a same view towards cross-disciplinarity. Adapted to contemporary Western instruments, the traditional repertoire explores the field of modern music, with daring incursions in improvisation and electro Chaabi. Through these new forms of expression, ORIENTAL MOOD builds a link between popular and art music, sustained by Cheikh Zein Mahmoud's vocal feats.
One of today's greatest voices of the Sufi and sacred repertoire from Upper Egypt, Cheikh Zein Mahmoud relates the epic tradition of Taghribat Bani Hilal, in keeping with grandmaster Sayyed Ed-Dowwi. This epic tale recounting the Arab tribes' journey from Hilal to Egypt and Tunisia reaches us through the vividness of a popular poetic language.
