FOCUS ON SEPTEMBER 2017

After a very hot summer, the show continues with the cinema screening "Soy Cuba", a major film from the Soviet era set during the end of the regime of Fulgencio Batista and his overthrow by Fidel Castro. The Faso Trio - gathering Diabaté, Kellner and Compaoré - proposes a Mandinka fusion with funk overtones. Following a few months break to finalise their album, Nafas will be back on stage in Cannes with their eclectic and mixed jazz. Finally, after its noteworthy creation at the last Jazz à Luz festival, we'll be pleased to hear JARAWA PROJECT again, an improvised jazz quintet on the initiative of trumpet player Aymeric Avice, at Tribu Festival. Keep your spirit sharp, your eyes peeled... and be all ears!

COMPAORÉ & LAJU @ Festival Phare

Cinema screening and live music as part of the 2nd edition of the short-film festival "Phare".

Duo performance on the movie "Soy Cuba" by Mikhaïl Kalatozov (1964).

An ethereal and melodic jazz, sustained by a rhythmic bond developed over the years by two musicians with singular backgrounds through their musical experiences together. Unclassifiable: contemporary sounds, Oriental rhythms, gentle touch on the strings, scratching on the drumheads, haunting melodies, overcharged percussion... From the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to the steppes of Central Asia, the encounter between these two identities with different easthetics truly makes all the richness of Jazz.

Ahmad Compaoré: drums, percussion
Vincent Laju: cello, electronics

FEE: 10€

FASO TRIO (DIABATÉ KELLNER COMPAORÉ)

Mandinka fusion concert.

Between traditional Africa and the modernity of mixed sounds by these three artists with significant international careers, Prince Diabaté, Jeff Kellner and Ahmad Compaoré invite us to a transcontinental journey between Conakry and Marseilles, thus remaining true to the melting pot of their cultures (Guinea, France, Burkina Faso). FASO TRIO proposes a repertoire both traditional and pop, with incursions in blues and funk, sustained by a rhythmics with rock overtones. Through the dialogue of their instruments, the musicians draw upon their diverse musical backgrounds and shared experience to produce a new brand of rootsy West-African music, multi-faceted, of universal appeal.

NAFAS

Jazz world concert as part of the "AfterWork" sessions.

NAFAS means « breath » in literary Arabic. Vital breath, it is the force that nurtures, inspires and creates. Ahmad Compaoré, Fred Pichot and Sylvain Terminiello have imagined an eclectic and mixed jazz transcending cultures and social belonging. Between free jazz, fusion and world music, NAFAS travels along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea mixing oriental, afrobeat or klezmer influences. Made of original compositions and revisited traditional themes, the repertoire is sustained by improvisation and spiced up with a touch of electro. Like a dialogue between popular and art music where tradition meets modernity...

Ahmad Compaoré: drums, percussion
Fred Pichot: saxophone, flute, effects
Sylvain Terminiello: bass

A coproduction Tribu Festival and Jazz à Luz, in partnership with Jazz d'Or Strasbourg.

Trumpet player and composer Aymeric Avice has gathered four musicians encountered along his musical career who have marked him by their total commitment and the virtuoso mastery of their respective instruments.
