CAMEL ZEKRI & THE DIWAN OF BISKRA (05/04/2013) 20:30
Concert as part of the "Culture(s) Maghreb" event.
The Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental (CRD) conveys you to a journey at the edge of the desert. Since January, under the conduction of French guitarist and composer Camel Zekri, students and teachers learn the Diwân repertoire performed in Biskra, an Algerian palm grove located on the borders of the Sahara. « The Diwân is a healing ritual performed by musicians, which belongs to the Gnawa tradition, also practised in Morocco » explains Camel Zekri, who was introduced to it by his grandfather.
As part of the residency held at the CRD, this artist with classical training (1st prize at the Paris Municipal Conservatoires) has completed a unique work of composition in order to adapt the repertoire to Western instruments. The written scores will be performed in his company during an audition by the Conservatoire students and teachers, held on Friday April 5th at 18:00. It will be followed at 20:30 by a concert with Camel Zekri and the Diwân musicians, some of them coming specially from Algeria.
