LUCKY PETERSON @ Manchester (25/01/2018) 19:30

Blues concert "Tribute to Jimmy Smith.

Organ virtuoso Lucky Peterson returns to Band on the Wall to perform a stunning tribute to the great American jazz musician Jimmy Smith. For this show, Peterson concentrates on the Hammond B-3 organ, his favourite instrument whose warm tone references to the songs of gospel and the hymns of soul music. When recording the quite brilliant "Tribute to Jimmy Smith" album, Peterson surrounded himself with virtuoso partners among whom stands the prodigy guitarist Kelyn Crapp. Throughout the album, Peterson is the repository of a long musical history rooted in the blues but very open; we find the pulsation of jazz, the groove of rhythm & blues and the energy of rock & roll. This is music that grooves, and could be called "jazz'n'blues", harking right back to the old days of the Blue Note. From 1956 to 1963, Jimmy Smith was also one of the locomotives of this label, knowing how to deploy with force and elegance. Here, Lucky Peterson channels the soulful jazz elegance of Smith, with his own unique interpretations of the great man's work. A show that promises to be genuinely unmissable for any jazz, blues or soul fan.
